Job Description: Artistic Director

 

Artistic Director's Purpose: 

To develop and carry out choral programming, collaborations, and concerts that enhance the mission of the organization.

Chorus Mission:

1) To present significant choral works in Bennington County, VT on a regular basis; 2) to encourage choral singing among persons who have not previously sung; 3) to promote interest and education in musicianship among members and the community; 4) to broaden the repertoire of the Choral Society and, by extension, community awareness of the diversity of choral music; and 5) to reflect, whenever possible, state and regional heritage in the composition of programming.

Rehearsals: Monday evenings 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm​

Supervised by: Board of Directors

Salary: $5,000 - $8,000

Job Type: Contract Position

Location: Bennington, VT

Responsibilities:

• Organize, with the board, a performance schedule for the year, including subscription concerts and outreach concerts

• Design each concert performance including theme development and integration of guest artists, ensembles, soloists, and visual elements

• Organize, with the board, a rehearsal schedule

• Ensure that current season music is selected and purchased

• Secure new arrangements and performance rights where appropriate

• Arrange for and supervise an accompanist

• Audition, select, and coach soloists and small group ensembles

• Contract with instrumentalists for each concert as needed

• Develop a rep book with pieces that can be used in outreach concerts

• Write narrative as needed for concert announcements and publicity

• Attend Board meetings and provide a report to the Board at each meeting

• Work with the chorus and Board to promote a positive atmosphere within the organization

• Network with other arts organizations, music directors, and community groups to increase the visibility of the chorus and to encourage collaboration

• Participate in professional development

• Review new choral works and recordings

 

Education/Experience:

BA or advanced degree in music with an emphasis in choral conducting or equivalent conducting experience.

 

Qualifications:​

• Experience conducting or working with a community-based chorus and with singers of various musical skills and experience

• Interest in and commitment to embracing the mission of the chorus

• Ability to offer strong leadership skills as well as balance work within a team setting

• Flexibility in working with a diverse group of personalities

• Strong written and verbal communication skills

• Ability to work within electronic mediums including, but not limited to, word processing, email, and internet
