Bennington County Choral Society Scholarship Program

Generously Sponsored by the Bank of Bennington

We have been encouraging young people in our community, and those in nearby New York and Massachusetts, to continue in their musical careers for over 40 years! Many of our scholarship winners have gone on to do just that and have performed on Broadway and much more.

The Bennington County Choral Society is not currently accepting applications for this scholarship. Please check back in the spring for updates on next year's auditions.

Scholarship Auditions & Awards

Each year, we award a first place prize of $500 and a runner-up prize of $200 to talented, young musicians.  The purpose of the scholarship is to provide financial support for the continued study of music. The scholarship awards are based on a competitive audition in front of their friends and family and two to three judges. Musicians will be notified of their performance time before the competition.

While the judges deliberate, students and their families are invited to attend a small reception. The winner(s) is announced after the reception. Prizes are awarded at the BCCS Spring Concert, where the winner will be invited to perform one of their pieces.

Applicants are asked to dress in performance-appropriate attire. Additionally, please bring three (3) copies of your music for the judges.

  • What is "standard repertoire"?
Standard repertoire varies per instrument. Generally, stick to something classical, jazz, or musical theater.
  • What is performance attire?
Aim for neat and presentable – something that would make your mom or grandma say, "Aww, you look so nice!" The industry standard is all black or black bottoms with a white top, though that's not required. Just keep in mind that you need to be comfortable enough that you won't be distracted from performing by your outfit.
  • Do I need to provide my own accompaniment?
An accompanist can be provided if necessary. Applicants that need an accompanist should provide their music ahead of time. There is a piano at the church that can be used if you choose to bring your own accompanist. Alternatively, you can bring a track to perform along with. If you do plan to use a track, please let us know so we can make the necessary arrangements.
  • Can I do a sound check or practice performing in the space before auditions?
We can't guarantee you'll have an opportunity to rehearse in the space beforehand. However, if you arrive early, you may have a few minutes to get a feel for the space.
  • Can my family come watch?
Yes, please invite your friends and family to come and support you! The scholarship auditions are open to the public.
